Brain Tissue Thickness Estimation using a Projection Scheme
نویسندگان
چکیده
Cortical thickness estimation can provide clinically relevant information with respect to several neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease (Thompson et. al., 2004) and schizophrenia (Kuperberg et. al., 2003). Previously, most cortical thickness measurements have focused solely on grey matter (GM) thickness. Here, we present a method that allows, besides GM thickness, also the thickness estimation of white matter (WM) and cerebrospinal fl uid (CSF). All thickness measurements are projected onto a common surface (the central surface, or CS), allowing direct comparison of thicknesses of all tissue classes. A test suite of phantoms is used for validation.

Tissue thickness and central surface estimation using a projection scheme
As expected, both methods have a higher RMS error for thickness estimation than for surface generation, both produce better results with PVE, and both perform better for the simpler gyral case compared to the sulcal case especially with small sulcal gap or strong asymmetries. Predicted by the sampling theorem, both show a strong increase of RMS error below sampling resolution for thickness meas...
متن کاملBrain Volume Estimation Enhancement by Morphological Image Processing Tools
Background: Volume estimation of brain is important for many neurological applications. It is necessary in measuring brain growth and changes in brain in normal/abnormal patients. Thus, accurate brain volume measurement is very important. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the method of choice for volume quantification due to excellent levels of image resolution and between-tissue contrast. St...

Several properties of the human brain cortex, e.g., cortical thickness and gyrification, have been found to correlate with the progress of neuropsychiatric disorders. The relationship between brain structure and function harbors a broad range of potential uses, particularly in clinical contexts, provided that robust methods for the extraction of suitable representations of the brain cortex from...
متن کاملNon-invasive estimation of cardiac wall stress by using tissue doppler-echocardiography ultrasound images: People with coronary artery stenosis
In this study, a method for non-invasive estimation of stress on the heart wall in the diastole phase is presented using ultrasound echocardiography and tissue Doppler imaging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the stress on the heart wall as a pre-diagnosis to identify people with coronary artery stenosis. 29 patients with stenosis of more than 70%, 30 patients with stenosis of 50 to 7...
متن کاملTopology-corrected segmentation and local intensity estimates for improved partial volume classification of brain cortex in MRI.
In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), accuracy and precision with which brain structures may be quantified are frequently affected by the partial volume (PV) effect. PV is due to the limited spatial resolution of MRI compared to the size of anatomical structures. Accurate classification of mixed voxels and correct estimation of the proportion of each pure tissue (fractional content) may help to ...
